1. Introduction

This document describes the MAINSAIL implementation for UNIX, the X/Open portable operating system, and other UNIX-compatible operating systems. This document describes only UNIX-specific MAINSAIL features. It assumes that the reader is familiar with the MAINSAIL Language Manual and other machine-independent MAINSAIL documentation.

1.1. Version

This version of the User's Guide for MAINSAIL on UNIX is current as of the proposed Version 16.30.1 of MAINSAIL (which has not yet been released).

1.2. UNIX Flavors and Shell Prompts

The different UNIX platforms are often referred to as flavors of UNIX. In flavor-independent examples of interaction with the UNIX shell, the percent sign (%) is shown as the shell prompt. In flavor-specific examples, the shell prompt typically used on the particular UNIX flavor is shown. Common UNIX shell prompts include the dollar sign ($), the percent sign (%), and the pound sign (#).
